Slovaks serve a big dinner on Christmas Eve with sauerkraut soup, fish fillet, and potato salad, followed by a twelve course dessert selection (they're small, mostly fruit). Someone cuts an apple in half, and if you get a nice star design inside it's good luck for the next year. Everyone opens gifts after dinner, not the next morning - and Santa doesn't bring the gifts, the baby Jesus does. Parents have to be ready beforehand with everything wrapped. While the family's eating, someone has to sneak into the living room and lay them out. Saint Mikulas (Nick) comes early on Dec 6th and leaves chocolate on your window sill. Town lights are just like in America. The tree decorations are all pretty cheap compared to what you can find in the US. :P This was probably too much info, but it's my favorite holiday.
